They may seem quaint by todays standards. They were used as euphemisms which hedge direct comments and soften criticism. Here are some examples, as I remember them:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"973\" src=\"https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Wood-Block-Astronomer-1024x973.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2543\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.0524427006076846;width:265px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Wood-Block-Astronomer-1024x973.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Wood-Block-Astronomer-300x285.jpg 300w, https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Wood-Block-Astronomer-767x729.jpg 767w, https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Wood-Block-Astronomer-1536x1460.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Wood-Block-Astronomer-2048x1946.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Wood-Block-Astronomer-660x627.jpg 660w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Not sure if it is a good idea:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aren&#8217;t we trying to move the church from the middle of the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put it out on the back porch and see if the cat licks it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Run it up the flagpole and see who salutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we have here is the blind man&#8217;s elephant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can&#8217;t read the label from inside the jar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Team work:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We should all be in the same boat pulling on the same oars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We went into the meeting saying no one should take a dive&#8230; and yet the smell of chlorine was in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Consider the Two Kinds of People<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is often said that there are two kinds of people in the world. Those that say yes; those that say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two kinds of people in the world, those that divide people into two groups and the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I like saying there are three kinds of people in the world.&nbsp;Those who can count and those who can\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Consider the purchase of a load of bread<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"586\" height=\"460\" src=\"https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Bakery-Breads.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2547\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.2739223479058392;width:358px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Bakery-Breads.png 586w, https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Bakery-Breads-300x235.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can tell everything about a person by the way they buy bread. Nearly everyone has some bread at home when they buy the new bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you buy the new bread, do you immediately eat the new loaf \u2013 or do you finish the old loaf first.&nbsp;That\u2019s the difference between the grasshoppers and the ants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grasshoppers eat the new bread because it is fresh and delicious \u2013 at the maximum level of flavour and taste.&nbsp;They want to enjoy it at its best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ants are more concerned with the availability of the bread than the flavour and they will finish the older bread first.&nbsp;They are willing to give up a little to get more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there are the folks who make French toast or stuffing with the staler bread. They are practical <em>and<\/em> inventive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Consider the Kind of People You Deal With<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the entry of an old medieval walled town, there is a blind beggar sitting beside the gate to the town as people go past him coming and going about their business.&nbsp;A man enters through the gate, looks around and walks up to the beggar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHello.&nbsp;Can you help me? I am moving to this town. What kind of people live here?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet me answer your question with a question&#8230;&nbsp;What are the people like in your town?\u201d says the beggar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell,\u201d says the man, \u201cthat\u2019s my problem. The people are all very nice, trustworthy and helpful. They are pleasant and courteous and always willing to lend a hand.&nbsp;When we move here, we are going to miss them and the way they support each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAhh,\u201d says the beggar, \u201cI have some good news for you.&nbsp;You will find the people in this town are very much the same.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day, at the same place the same blind beggar sits. A man enters through the gate and walks up to the beggar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHello. Can you help me? II am moving to this town. What kind of people live here?\u201d the newcomer asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet me answer your question with a question&#8230;&nbsp;What are the people like in your town?\u201d says the beggar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell,\u201d says the man, \u201cI am going to be happy to be rid of them.&nbsp;Those people are never very nice or helpful.&nbsp; They never have a good word to say. They complain endlessly about everything. They are always looking for an advantage and always out for themselves. You can\u2019t trust any of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAhh,\u201d says the beggar, \u201cthen, I have some very bad news for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Consider Eating Bacon and Eggs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"370\" height=\"321\" src=\"https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Bacon-and-Eggs.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2562\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.152704084116244;width:303px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Bacon-and-Eggs.png 370w, https:\/\/calexis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Bacon-and-Eggs-300x260.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you prepare bacon and eggs for breakfast, it is like any other project. The chicken is involved.&nbsp; And, it can walk away any time afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pig on the other hand is committed. It has no remaining options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is like that with many projects, people are either somewhat involved or totally committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The whole game in business is to turn people into pigs.&nbsp;Get them committed to a project or idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they are only chickens, they can walk away at any time and leave you in the lurch.
