Everybody thinks they know advertising and can provide us with a critique of what\u2019s good and what\u2019s not.  Rarely do I hear criticism that shows consumers understand the strategies we employ to get messages across.<\/p>\n\n\n

More often than not people evaluate commercials based on entertainment value.  We don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I recall shortly after we had begun airing a commercial for Subway launching their breakfast.  My son and I were in one of the big box club stores.  When we got to the checkout, the cashier looked at my member card and said \u201cCalexis.  What\u2019s Calexis?  What kind of company is that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell…\u201d I stammered, \u201cwe are an advertising agency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo what have you done, that I have seen?\u201d she asked, maintaining her dismissive yet friendly demeanor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe just aired a commercial for Subway, launching their breakfast,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh yeah?  Is that the commercial where the girl wakes up and has problems with her contact lens.  And then has to dodge some dogs walking down the street?  And then goes into a Subway for breakfast where some guy gives her the eye?  Well, I have been into Subway and I have tried their breakfast and it was really good,\u201d she said, finally drawing a breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTerrific!\u201d I say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026but your commercial sucks!\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHuh?  What do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat girl!  Why did you choose that girl?  She has a big nose!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we I walked out, my son said, “I don’t think she liked your commercial” but I was thinking\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
